Counseling for Anxiety & Depression
Anxiety and depression can feel all-encompassing and terribly lonely.
Anxiety & Depression Counseling in Cold Spring Harbor, NY
Anxiety and depression can feel all-encompassing and terribly lonely and if you're living in Huntington, Northport, Cold Spring Harbor, Syosset, Oyster Bay or anywhere along Long Island's North Shore, you're not alone in feeling that way.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), anxiety disorders and major depressive disorder are the two most common mental health diagnoses in the country. The pace of modern life, and the shift onto digital screens after the pandemic, have only made that more true. So if you're struggling, you're not alone, and you're not broken.
At Gooding Wellness Group, we work with adults, teens, and families navigating anxiety and depression every day. Our team of 18 licensed therapists, of LCSWs, LMHCs, and LMFTs, is based in Cold Spring Harbor and serves the broader North Shore community, with teletherapy available throughout New York State.
How We Treat Anxiety and Depression at the Gooding Wellness Group
There's no single "right" treatment for anxiety or depression. Our clinicians draw from a range of evidence-based approaches, tailored to what actually works for you:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is often the starting point. It helps identify the thought patterns driving anxiety and depression — and replace them with more realistic, helpful ones. It's one of the most well-researched treatments available.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is particularly effective when anxiety or depression is rooted in past trauma or difficult life experiences. Gordon Gooding, LCSW-R, our founder and director, is certified in Attachment-Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR) through the Parnell Institute.
Mindfulness-based approaches help build moment-to-moment awareness of what's happening in your mind and body, a core skill for managing both anxiety and depression.
Somatic and body-based techniques recognize that anxiety and depression live in the body as much as the mind — and that healing sometimes starts there.
Practical skill-building, including stress management, communication skills, boundary-setting, and resilience tools, rounds out a treatment plan that doesn't just address symptoms but builds long-term capacity to manage life's challenges.
We also offer a free 7-day anxiety email series for those who want to start learning before they're ready to make an appointment. See the signup below.
Working With the Right Therapist Makes All the Difference
We're a group practice, not a solo practice, which means we have real flexibility in matching you with the right clinician based on your specific concerns, schedule and whether you prefer in-person or virtual sessions.
In-person care is available at our offices at 147 and 181 Main Street, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724. For clients who prefer to meet virtually, we offer teletherapy throughout New York State.
If you're not sure where to start, our consultation process is designed to take the guesswork out of it. You'll speak with someone who can hear what you're dealing with and connect you with the right person on our team.
What's the difference between anxiety and depression?
Anxiety is primarily characterized by excessive worry, fear, or nervousness about future events or situations. Depression tends to involve persistent low mood, loss of interest or motivation, and often a heaviness or emptiness that doesn't lift. The two commonly co-occur, many people experience both at once, which is one reason professional assessment matters. A therapist can help identify what's driving your specific experience and build a treatment plan around it.
How do I know if I need therapy or if I can manage on my own?
If anxiety or depression is interfering with your daily life, your sleep, your relationships, your work, your ability to feel present or enjoy things, that's a good sign it's time to talk to someone. You don't have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many people come to us because they want support navigating a difficult period, or because they've been managing on their own for too long and are ready for something to actually change.
Do you treat anxiety and depression in teens and adolescents?
Yes. Our clinicians have extensive experience working with teens and adolescents across Long Island's North Shore, including in Huntington, Northport, and Syosset. For younger clients, we strongly believe in-person care produces better outcomes than virtual sessions, particularly for anxiety, depression, and any concerns around substance use. We work with the whole family when appropriate.
What types of therapy do you use for anxiety and depression?
Our clinicians are trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, mindfulness-based approaches, and a range of other evidence-based modalities. Treatment is individualized, we don't use a one-size-fits-all approach. Your therapist will work with you to identify the approaches that fit your history, your goals, and how you experience your symptoms.
Do you accept insurance for anxiety and depression treatment?
We are primarily an Out-of-Network Provider. which means we do not work directly with insurance companies. If you have out of network coverage, it’s possible you may be able to be reimbursed for some of the session fee. Every plan is different. We will send you a Superbill every month that you can submit with a claim to your insurance company which has all of the information they will need to process your claim. If reimbursement is necessary for you, then we advise that you contact your insurance company in advance of services to determine if you will have any coverage. We do have three therapist that take limited insurance by accepting Carelon Behavioral Health, Cigna Healthcare, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Aetna. We recommend checking your specific benefits before your first appointment, and our team can help walk you through the process.
