A Message from Gordon Gooding, LCSW
I have been a school social worker on Long Island for 30 years. I have sat with thousands of kids in hallways, cafeterias, and counseling offices, and I have watched the landscape of childhood change in ways that still catch me off guard. I have also watched my own daughters move through this same system. So when I say I understand the pressure Long Island families are living under right now, I mean it from every angle.
Here is what I know: the pressure your children are feeling is real. The pressure you are feeling as a parent is equally real. And the fact that childhood has become more intense, more competitive, and more scheduled than it was when we were growing up is not your imagination. The data backs it up. The clinical work backs it up.
"We've unintentionally turned childhood into a resume-building exercise instead of a developmental experience."- Gordon Gooding. LCSW
The Resilience Muscle is my attempt to give something back to the Long Island families I have been privileged to serve for three decades. It is grounded in research, written in plain language, and delivered one email at a time over seven days. No jargon. No guilt. No generic wellness advice that could apply to anyone, anywhere. This is for parents who are navigating the specific, real, and increasingly intense pressures of raising children here.
I hope something from this week stays with you. And I hope it gives you a little more confidence that you are doing more right than you think.

What's inside
Each email is clinically grounded, practically focused, and written in plain language. You will not find generic advice here. You will find the same perspective Gordon shares with families in his office — honest, warm, and informed by 30 years of sitting with real kids in real communities.
Seven days. Seven topics.
Real answers for Long Island parents.
Day 1
The Pressure Cooker of Modern Childhood
We look at what the data actually shows about childhood stress on Long Island and across New York State, why the pressure is landing on parents just as hard as it is landing on kids, and what the feedback loop inside our families looks like when urgency replaces intention.
Day 2
Why Resilience and Grit Matter More Than Talent and Perfection
Day 2 takes you inside that research — and into something equally important: the damage perfectionism does. Core message: Kids do not need to be the best. They need to believe they can handle hard things.
Day 3
The Stress Curve and Finding the Green Zone
In 1908, psychologists Yerkes and Dodson discovered something that has held up for over a century: human performance follows a curve. Too little stress and kids drift. Too much stress and they burn out. But right in the middle — the green zone — is where growth lives.
Day 4
Recognizing Burnout in Kids Before It Becomes a Bigger Problem
Day 4 walks you through nine specific warning signs to watch for — not as a checklist for panic, but as a clinical guide for paying attention in the right places. We also address something I feel strongly about: when it is time to stop wondering and start reaching out for professional support.
Day 5
Let Them Struggle — Building the Resilience Muscle
Day 5 draws a clear line between rescuing and coaching. It gives you specific, practical language for what to say when your child is struggling. And it walks through what healthy support looks like at every age — elementary school, middle school, and high school.
Day 6
Connection Is the Foundation of Resilience
Day 6 takes you into the neuroscience of why. We talk about co-regulation, how the Long Island community itself is an infrastructure for connection, and how some of the most important conversations in a family's life happen when nobody planned on having a conversation at all.
Day 7
Modeling Resilience at Home — Where It All Comes Together
This email is the one that brings everything else together. Because everything we have covered — the stress curve, the resilience muscle, the coaching instead of rescuing, the in-person connection — all of it is filtered, first and most powerfully, through you. Core message: The most resilient thing in your child's life is you — showing up, staying present, and getting back up again.
