Trauma Therapy
"Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence." -Peter Levine, Ph.D.
Often when we think of trauma, we think of the kinds of events that threaten our physical safety or where we suffered a physical injury.
There are more “common” ways we can experience trauma, though, like divorce, infidelity, or financial distress, for example. While these experiences may not pose an immediate threat to our physical safety, they nevertheless result in a feeling of fear and threat to our self and well-being that is just as intense as a single traumatic event.
Both kinds of trauma have very real effects on us, leaving us feeling helpless, and impeding our ability to live the life we want, where we feel safe, secure, loved, and peaceful.
Signs You May Be Struggling With Trauma
Trauma doesn't always look like flashbacks or nightmares. It can show up as feeling constantly on edge or easily startled, difficulty trusting people or feeling safe in relationships, avoiding places, people, or situations that remind you of what happened, trouble sleeping or concentrating, or a sense of being “stuck” — replaying the past or feeling emotionally numb. If any of this sounds familiar, it doesn't mean something is wrong with you; it means your nervous system is still holding onto something that needs support to process.
How Trauma Therapy Works Here
Your clinician will start by understanding your history and what you're hoping to change, then recommend an approach suited to you — this might include EMDR, the Flash Technique, or talk-therapy-based approaches, often used in combination. Treatment moves at a pace you're in control of; the goal is never to overwhelm you, but to help your nervous system process what happened so it stops running the show.
We also offer EMDR & Flash Technique to assist in the treatment of certain traumas. Also check out Our Facing Trauma Micro Course!

What's the difference between trauma therapy, EMDR, and the Flash Technique?
Trauma therapy is the broader umbrella; EMDR and the Flash Technique are two specific, evidence-based approaches we use within it. Your clinician will recommend the approach — or combination of approaches — that fits your situation.
How do I know if I need therapy or if I can manage on my own?
Not necessarily. Depending on the approach, especially EMDR or the Flash Technique, you may not need to describe the event in detail for treatment to be effective.
How do I know if what I went through “counts” as trauma?
If an experience left you feeling frightened, helpless, or unable to feel safe — whether that was a single event or an ongoing situation like a difficult divorce — it's worth talking to someone. You don't need a diagnosis to start.
Is trauma therapy available for teens as well as adults?
Yes, several of our clinicians work with both adults and teens.
