The Flash Technique (FT) for Trauma Recovery

Flash Technique (FT) is a gentle, minimally upsetting approach to help people process traumatic or distressing memories quickly and effectively.

Flash Technique (FT) is a gentle, minimally upsetting approach to help people process traumatic or distressing memories quickly and effectively. Growing clinical use and research show it can reduce the intensity of traumatic memories.

The core of FT involves focusing attention on something positive or neutral while a specially trained clinician guides brief, structured moments that allow the brain to process distressing memories in the background.

FT can be used alongside other therapies, such as EMDR, to safely approach trauma. It reduces the emotional charge of a memory without requiring you to fully revisit or retell the experience. It is also used to support treatment for anxiety, depression, dissociation, and other stress-related concerns.

We also offer EMDR to assist in the treatment of certain traumas.  Also check out Our Facing Trauma Micro Course!

Basic Explanation of Flash Technique:

FT helps the brain process memories that are "stuck" in the nervous system with their original emotional intensity. Your attention remains on something calming, allowing your nervous system to stay regulated while the memory loses its emotional intensity. Your own brain does the healing work, and you remain in control.

Flash Technique often includes Bilateral Stimulation (BLS), such as gentle side-to-side eye movements or alternating tapping. BLS, commonly used in EMDR, supports the brain’s natural ability to process and integrate difficult experiences.

During FT, BLS is used while you focus on a positive or neutral target, helping the brain process the memory in the background while you remain grounded and regulated.

Is the Flash Technique the same as EMDR?

They're related but not identical. Both use bilateral stimulation, and the Flash Technique is sometimes used alongside EMDR. The key difference is that FT keeps your attention on something calming rather than directly on the traumatic memory, which makes it a gentler entry point for some people.

Do I have to describe my trauma in detail during Flash Technique?

No. That's one of the main appeals of FT, it's designed to reduce the emotional intensity of a memory without requiring you to fully revisit or retell what happened.

How quickly does the Flash Technique work?

Many people notice a reduction in the emotional intensity of a targeted memory within a session or two, though this varies by person and by what's being processed.

Who is the Flash Technique a good fit for?

It can be a good option for people who find it too distressing to focus directly on a traumatic memory, or who want a gentler starting point before or alongside other trauma-focused approaches like EMDR.
